In part 1 of the round of 16

Ronaldinho’s first goal for Brazil managed a comfortable 81% of the vote over Neymar’s volley at the 2013 Confederations Cup.

Squeaking by with 52% of the vote, Pelé’s solo goal against Mexico at the 1962 World Cup advanced at the expense of Josimar’s solo goal against Poland in 1986.

That Roberto Carlos goal continued its cruise through the bracket, dispatching Bebeto’s cradle-rocking goal against the Netherlands in 1994 with 92% of the vote.

Lastly, Pelé’s goal against Sweden in the 1958 World Cup final proved superior to Ronaldinho’s goal against England in 2002, even with the latter’s incredible Mexican commentary, getting 84% of the vote.

And now…

TODAY’S VOTING

Our first matchup begins with Kaká’s solo goal against Argentina at the end of a 3-0 friendly win in 2006. (Go to 8:41 in the video if the timestamp doesn’t appear automatically.)

Its competition is Nelinho’s trivela equalizer from the 1978 World Cup third-place match, a 2-1 win against Italy.

Matchup two pits a legendary volley, Éder’s late winner against the USSR in the first game of the 1982 World Cup…

…against a legendary team goal, ultimately scored by Adriano to cap off a 4-1 obliteration of Argentina in the 2005 Confederations Cup final.

Next, we pit two of Brazil’s most famous team goals against each other. You have the long-elegant string of plays of Carlos Alberto’s goal at the end of the 4-1 win in the 1970 World Cup final against Italy…

…and the rapid-fire combination that produced Careca’s opening goal in the 1986 quarterfinal defeat to France.

Rounding things off, a matchup between Edmilson’s bicycle kick in a 5-2 win over Costa Rica in the 2002 World Cup group stage…

…and Marta’s solo goal at the end of a 4-0 win over the USA in the semifinal of the 2007 Women’s World Cup.

Let’s have this round done by Saturday night.
