TODAY’S VOTING

We kick things off with an unbelievably high-quality matchup. Both these goals are absolutely incredible, and neither occurred in circumstances that carried much significance otherwise, making this choice particularly tough.

Seeded higher, we have Roberto Carlos’ legendary bending free kick against France in the 1997 Le Tournoi friendly tournament:

And coming into the final bracket as a “16-seed”, Maicon’s Maradona-like solo goal against Paraguay in the 2004 Pre-Olympic Tournament:

Two iconic goals of great importance face off here. First is Sócrates’ late equalizer against the USSR in the opening game of the 1982 World Cup:

It faces Ronaldo’s second goal in the 2002 World Cup final against Germany:

Up next, we have Ronaldinho’s game-winning free kick in the 2002 World Cup quarterfinal against England (presented here with the only commentary that does it justice, video quality be damned)…

Facing Márcio Rossini’s backheel in a 1983 friendly against Sweden:

Finally, we have Júlio Baptista’s spectacular bicycle kick from a 2004 friendly against Catalunya…

…facing Éder’s famous chip against Scotland in the 1982 World Cup group stage.

“GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL de gênio, de gênio, de gênio do Éder!”

I’m aiming to have this round of voting wrapped up by Wednesday night.
