Storylines to watch

  • Sans the star: Both teams are playing tomorrow without their number 10. Marta is still recovering from an injury but remains in the squad; Neymar’s ankle injury has resulted in him being cut altogether. For both teams, there are serious questions about whether the rest of the squad has the talent to make up for their star player’s absence. At least the women might only be without Marta for a single, easy game.
  • THIAGO: After a knee injury that put his odds of playing at the Copa América in serious jeopardy, Thiago Silva is back in the starting lineup! Let’s see how he looks after two whole months without playing. It’s not like Miranda was very good against Qatar the other day.
  • Replacing Neymar: Everton Cebolinha was the one who came on for the injured Neymar against Qatar, but after a very disappointing display, it seems like David Neres has usurped him. Tite has typically interpreted his players’ roles in very rigid ways, so it seemed like Neres—clearly the better player right now—might lose out to Everton by virtue of being seen as a right winger rather than a left winger. Instead, Tite appears to have made a bold choice by his standards: it seems Richarlison will move from the right wing to the left wing (which, in truth, is his best position) and David Neres will step in on the right. Will it work? Which of the two will inevitably and inexplicably be dropped for Willian ahead of the Copa opener? We’ll have to wait and see.
