On Romário Appreciation Day, only one of O Baixinho‘s goals made it through…

His goal against Israel in 1987 lost to Nelinho’s famous swerving shot in the 1978 World Cup third-place match, which won 61% of the vote:

His volley against Mexico in 1997 beat Pelé’s goal against Romania in the 1970 World Cup, earning 62% of the vote:

His backheel against Mexico in 2001 lost out to Careca’s famous goal against France in the 1986 World Cup, which won 60% of the vote:

And his goal against Italy in the 1997 Le Tournoi lost, just barely, to Marta’s solo goal against the USA in 2014, which squeaked by with 52% of the vote. Her win guarantees that we’ll have two goals from the women’s team in the round of 32.

You can view the whole bracket so far here.

And now, what you’ve all been waiting for…

TODAY’S VOTING

Up first is a goal you’ve all been waiting for, arguably the greatest goal in World Cup history: the elaborate team play, culminating in Carlos Alberto’s strike, that wrapped up the 1970 World Cup final win over Italy:

Its noble challenger is another great World Cup final goal, and a decisive one, albeit only from the U-20 version of the tournament: it’s Oscar’s game-winning, extra-time, hat-trick goal in the 2011 U-20 World Cup final against Portugal.

Our next matchup starts with one of the greatest acrobatic goals Brazil’s ever scored at a World Cup: Edmilson in a 5-2 win over Costa Rica in the 2002 group stage.

And wouldn’t you know it, we’ve also got another goal from that 1970 World Cup final. This is Pelé’s goal that opened the scoring.

It’s iconic goals in every matchup today. Bebeto’s volley against Argentina opened the final group stage of the 1989 Copa América, setting Brazil on their way to a first international title in 19 years.

Against it is a forgotten gem: this Van Basten-esque strike from Cafu against Wales in a 2000 friendly. So many aesthetically pleasing kicks today!

And we wrap up the first round of voting with two goals from the women’s team.

In the semifinals of the 2007 Women’s World Cup, Brazil pulled off a stunning 4-0 thrashing of perennial favorites the United States, which Marta capped off with this astonishing solo goal, fittingly narrated by Luciano do Valle

And the final goal of the bracket: Cristiane’s bicycle kick in a 3-1 win over Nigeria in the group stage of the 2008 Olympics.

And now, we’ve finally reached the end of the first round. Let’s try for Saturday night on wrapping up this round of voting and beginning, at long last, the round of 32.
